The economically diverse Township of St. Clair occupies a 620 square-kilometre stretch of land along the bank of the St. Clair River, south of the City of Sarnia. It encompasses
the communities of Corunna, Brigden, Courtright, Mooretown, Wilkesport, Port Lambton and Sombra Village.
Given the Township of St. Clair’s considerable natural resources and attractions, a variety of recreational opportunities are available to local residents beginning with swimming, boating, sailing and fishing on the waters of the St. Clair River.
The community of Corunna serves as the municipality’s major commercial and retail centre. The revitalized Corunna commercial core is experiencing growth as a tourism locale. Corunna is home to two community festivals; Firemen’s Field Days in June and Captain Kidd Days in August.
The Township of St. Clair is home to the St. Clair Parkway Golf Course in Mooretown, an 18 hole championship course.
The Township’s largest recreational facility is located at the Mooretown Sports Complex. The Complex has double ice pads, a small Olympic swimming pool, health club and meeting halls.
Of note to the Township of St. Clair are the Moore and Sombra Museums, which profile the historical development of the region’s agricultural roots.
Organized by the Moore Agricultural Society, the annual Brigden Fall Fair is the largest event of its kind in the region, attracting over 50,000 attendees during the Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend.
Another significant attraction is the Bickford Oak Woods, which has been designated a “natural environment” by the Nature Conservancy of Canada. The Woods support a rich variety of species including the provincially rare Pin Oak, Shumard Oak and Buttonbush Thicket as well as rare bird species.
Along the St. Clair River, Sombra Village is growing as a popular Southwestern Ontario tourism destination, due partly to its charming Victorian district of more than 20 shops and boutiques. Sombra also has an international ferry crossing to the U.S.
