Figure skating is a sport in which individuals, pairs, or groups perform spins, jumps, footwork and other challenging moves on ice. Figure skaters compete at various levels from beginner up to the Olympic level, and at local, national, and international competitions.
Skating began early in Canadian history. Skating took hold before Canada existed as a country when the area was known as New France. The first immigrants arriving from Europe brought skates in their luggage. Skating was so popular that on December 24, 1748, an ordinance was issued forbidding people to skate on the streets of Québec.
Originating in 1887 the Amateur Skating Association of Canada, now known as Skate Canada, is the governing body in Canada. Skate Canada is the largest figure skating governing body in the world.
